~Authenticity of Quotes~
Authenticity: When is a quote not a quote

Tal and greetings all...
Recently upon Message Boards I have came across the following Quote:
In most cities, among the most elite, it is not uncommon for a young girl to never really know her father, since the men are concerned with matters of business, politics and military matters and women are the caregivers and tenders of the home. Behavior and Attitude of The Gorean Free Woman A woman who flirts too much with any Groean Man, or attempts to back a Gorean Warrior down is testing the fates. This kind of woman needs to know that by doing so, she will most likely end up wearing a ko-lar. She is to have class, grace, and dignity and above all be a woman of virtue. Such a woman would never display any signs that she wishes to serve as a slave to a Man by flirting, or behaving in a manner that is more becoming a slave. Likewise, a free woman is very cautious about her travels in that she would never be caught in the lowly paga taverns that lay scattered in every city of Gor. Assassin of Gor, Book 5, p.22
Now what concerns Me is the Authenticity of this quote ~SS~…
First: My Free Companion has already stated in a earlier thread on another board
it is not on that page nor for that matter that book.
Second: I have never heard Norman refer to the High Castes as “the most elite”.
Third: it does not read in anyway to Normans writing style
Fourth: the termonology ko-lar I think was only used once in the books that in Slave Girl…
I could go on but I am sure You A/all get the idea of what I am saying ~S~ and yes I could be wrong though if I am I will eat My veils*L*…Or it maybe a quote that has been copied improperly please any knowledge of this quote would be greatly appreciated. Though if I am right this is just another example that causes a misinterpretation of the Gorean Free Woman online.
Yours truthfully

I do not have this particular book so I can not say whether or not this particular quote is in the books or not. ~grin~
But I am most concerned with information being put out there to the General Public that is wrong. I for One on the books I have not had the honor and chance to read take a quote posted as correct. Well I guess I just got a wake up call...LOL...
It is scarey to think that I may have acted on what was posted thinking that there was fact to the post when there was none. As percarius as Our life and Freedom on Gor is We need to be able to be sure of what We read is in fact the truth. And then pass that knowledge down intact and in truth ~smiles~
Beware My Friends what You read or are told. The best information is learned by sweat not the easy post of Another *S* They may not have meant to misquote but then again We have all met T/those W/who's ideas are aliitle out there in T/thier interpretation of the books and what JN meant by this book or the other. ~smiling~
Well as I always say Keep Your head low and Your neck Free *S*
Be well

Tal Ladies!
Book 5, page 22 Has NOTHING pertaning to Free Women. Nor anything CLOSE to the quote posted above. Page 22 is about Kurrus taking vella in to the alcoves...I just wanted to post that to let all know, that that is NOT authentic.
Here is an idea to throw up in the air. I have read over MANY books, and Many more websites with contradicting rules and quotes about FW. A thought popped in to My mind that perhaps Many ideas where posted to restrict what and what not FW could do online. Yes, in some Gorean cultures, FW where heavily restricted, and primarily stayed with in the home, and could not leave with out permission from a Male family Member. Where as in others, FW could walk around, no veils, and in some cultures, ie the norhtern and planes FW, didnt have to wear robes.
Basicly, it all depended on where you where from. Thus the contradictory Messages Posted all over the internet that are pretaining to FW in general can be, and in many cases, are wrong. There are no set rules except for the remaining factor, that Gor is a Mans world and they must be respected.
just some thoughts....

this one has read many of the Books, and in his readings he believes he has come across that qoute. this one cannot remember which book that was in, but he does remember it, or at least something very close. he shall go and look for it.
but on a different note, it is pretty scary that perhaps some of the things that he has taken for fact, has actually been nothing more than the words of a confused kajirae or unknowing Free. he has read many of the books, but not all, and so there are many qoutes which he cannot verify if he has not read the book from which it was qouted. so, if a Free has made the qoute, he can only accept the qoute as truth and follow it without question...

I too have had similar thoughts about the same issue that You have spoken about ~SS~…I too believe to some extent that it is to restrict online behaviour of Free Women. I also feel that in the early days of online Gor there were only Masters and slaves doing these pages so to enforce “power” over the FWs I feel they only posted what was indeed to the Mans benefit/interpretation….Thus as new sites started up and pages added these quotes where just lifted to save work and have been embroiled into online Gor as We now know it…
Also being outnumbered as We are even now it is hard to get Our views across as to what actually pertains a FW. J Norman dose not make it any easier either as His books tell the stories from a Mans perspective and only touches on the Free Women’ place in the culture occasionally. However as I meet and speak with more Women such as Yourself with an innate knowledge of the books I feel that it can only get easier for Us online….Also I have the utmost respect for a handful of Men online who know their books and what respect was given to Free Women on Gor ~S~ Hopefully this number will grow in time….
I wish You well

Ah, but Yee who didn't leave a name, you left out the best part of the quote.
"The Man who respects a Woman does not know what else to do with her, " I said. "I ment only to indicate that women are inordinately precious and desirable."
(and for those who it might make more sense to, replace inordinately with extravagantly, and it still means the same thing)
Just thought I would point that out...

Cassandra, You just hit on one of My greatest pet peeves... Quotes taken incomplete or out of context.... Changes the picture somewhat to get the whole picture... My thanks to You
